The Hindu publishes a photograph taken by me, without attribution

The Hindu in 5th Page of its Chennai Edition today has published a photograph taken by me, without any attribution to the source. I'm sure they would be equally concerned about plagiarism and this might have happened accidently. It's most likely that they might have recieved the photograph without any details of the source. And since the news article which carried the photograph was about Wikipedia Academy launch by Jimmy Wales, one of the events organized by our "The Knowledge Foundation", I'm not going to cry foul. I'm happy that they found a amatuer photographer's photo good enough to publish in a national daily!

That sucks, you might be happy that your photo got published, but not taking any action will only encourage the Hindu to continue stealing images from the community. Its been done to me plenty of times before and im fed up.

Its time the indian media learnt to respect copyright laws and stopped screwing with our rights like this. You have the legal right to sue The Hindu for damages amounting to the entire sale of that edition. The Hindu is not some charity newspaper. Take action

Jaggy,

It's NOT Hindu's fault, entirely. They wanted photos of the event and I sent them the link to our photos. You were right when you said, "It's most likely that they might have recieved the photograph without any details of the source." It would have helped if I had requested them to provide attribution which I'm sure they would have. By the time I meant to inform them, it was way past printing time.

Bitterscotch, it would be wrong to jump the gun and they definitley were not 'stealing'. We (Knowledge Founation) know quite a few people within Hindu and they are very nice folks.

@Kiruba,

Thanks for the clarification. If you have just mailed them the link of photos, I think they should have done a check on attribution issues. Anyways, I see this an oversight by an individual not the organisation at large. Further, I uploaded all the photographs only for others to use it. So, not an issue for me. Just that, attribution would have acknowledged the effort put in by someone.

@bitterscotch

Thanks a lot for your support. Lets see how "The Hindu" responds to this.

@kiruba
since youve clarified it doesnt seem to be an issue, but i wouldnt call the media (including Hindu) nice people, they have all stolen from me before and never bothered to respond.

Its all the more easy for them because no one takes them to court or fights for damages. Stealing images from flickr and wikipedia has become the norm for even the biggest names in the business

@jaggy
not much of an issue now. too bad, i was hoping theyd get their butts kicked :P
